[SB] Explain how Chinggis Khan attained so much power, his military tactics, and administrative structure
Disha Chanana
Gaining power
- He was born in 1167 to a noble family and his original name was temüjin
- He grew up as a strong warrior and allied many clans together
- His father abandoned him and he was left in poverty having to escape from enemies trying to get rid of him to help their own success
- In the late 12th century he allied with an important mongol clan leader and mastered the art of steppe diplomacy
- Overtime he strengthened his position by taking over rivals for power and eventually brought the mongols under one rule declaring himself the ruler "Chinggis Kahn" or universal ruler
Military
- Their army was remarkable, even though they had considerably less people than other places at the time, because they grew up mastering equestrian skills and the bow and arrow
- They traveled great distances to surprise the enemy
- If the opposing forces surrendered they would usually be let go, but if they put up resistance they were killed sparing only a few people
- The army was a way of showing power for such a small state
- Eventually they took over turkish people in Tibet, Northern China, and Persia
- He extended rule to northern china through frequent raids of the area
- He captured their capital in 1215 and by 1220 he had control over most of Northern China
ADministrative structute
- Because of past experiences he broke up his tribes and forced men who are old enough to form non tribal military units
- He chose political or military leaders based on their skills, talents, and loyalty rather than kinship
- He made the capital at Karakorum or present day Har Horin, but wasn't here very often, because he was usually horseback riding
- Having a capital was a symbol to people that there was now a unified authority rather than clans or tribes
- In doing this he created a state that was stronger and more unified due to less conflict between clans or tribes
